Hotels in Copenhagen: prices, timing and areas
Copenhagen is one of the more expensive cities in Europe for a room, so it pays to know when and where to book. Guests stay about three nights on average and move between the Nyhavn harbour, the Tivoli Gardens and the Little Mermaid, getting around mostly by bike and metro. Room prices depend heavily on the season: February is the cheapest, spring and summer the priciest. This list has 786 properties, from a hostel bed to a design hotel in the centre. Below is what really drives the price of a stay in Copenhagen: the month, the day of the week and the district.
When to book a stay in Copenhagen for less
Copenhagen is cheapest in the middle of winter. February is usually the bottom of the market, about 32 percent below the yearly average, and October is the second cheap window. May is the priciest, at the start of the season, when rates reach their highest of the year. The arrival day matters too: Sunday is the cheapest, Thursday the most expensive, as prices rise ahead of the weekend. For a regular trip, book ahead, ideally about 51 days before the date, because free rooms in the centre get pricey after that.
What a stay costs by property type
Copenhagen has a wide spread of prices, so a hostel bed and a family room in the centre are quite far apart. The cheapest sleep is in hostels and two-star places; you pay the most for five stars by the old harbour. Below are indicative nightly rates.
| Property type | Indicative price per night (from) |
| Hostel bed or two-star place | from approx. DKK 410 |
| Three-star hotel | from approx. DKK 820 |
| Family room | from approx. DKK 1,790 |
| Four-star hotel | from approx. DKK 1,120 |
| Trendy or design room | from approx. DKK 1,710 |
| Five-star hotel | from approx. DKK 2,540 |

Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more
The most popular area among guests is the City Center, with the Nyhavn harbour, the Tivoli Gardens and the Strøget shopping street within a walk. The historic Indre By sits right beside it, while Vesterbro is the cheaper, trendy alternative with cafes and nightlife. The cheapest sleep is in Vesterbro, clearly below the city average. The most expensive is the island district of Christianshavn with its canals, about 32 percent above the average. Bikes and the metro cross the city in a quarter of an hour, so a base further from the centre is still convenient.
Which stay in Copenhagen suits whom
- First time in Copenhagen. The City Center is the easiest base. From here it is a few minutes to Nyhavn, Tivoli and the Strøget.
- For families. Family rooms in mid-range hotels near Tivoli and the zoo. Easy to mix sightseeing with a break in the Kongens Have park.
- For couples. Vesterbro with cafes, bars and clubs, and an evening walk along the Nyhavn canal with its coloured houses. Most attractions are close from there.
- With breakfast. Many hotels in the centre include a buffet in the rate, which helps you set off early for the museums. Handy in an expensive city where breakfast out adds up.
- Near the airport. Hotels by Copenhagen airport in Kastrup suit an early flight or a layover. The metro runs from the airport to the centre without a change.
- With a view. Properties by Nyhavn and along the canals look out over the harbour and coloured facades. The most such rooms are in the City Center.

When Copenhagen is more expensive
Prices rise in the season of events and in summer. They climb from May, and the peak holds through the warm months. In July the city fills with the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, with concerts in parks and cafes; in August comes the Copenhagen Pride parade; and at the turn of August and September the Copenhagen Cooking food festival takes place. In winter Tivoli turns into a Christmas market. On those dates rooms in the centre go fastest, so it is worth booking early.
